First the stats in that article cannot possibly represent reality, rather I think those abuse rates reflect societal perception. Sure, many young people drink and do drugs…but do we really believe senior rates are at 1%??? Let’s venture into the gated communities to see when happy hour starts, and how many attend daily. We just have a different tolerance for those advanced in years who drink daily.

Second, the whole exclusivity of AA is nauseating. By definition, AA is a club where substance abuse is a problem, and the goal is to rid life of that problem. Let’s pull out that measuring stick and deem pass or fail, rather than addressing what the real issues are for these people.

Third, if we are going to address the real issues in life, should we not include ALL avenues of addiction? What about the workaholic and the one addicted to religion? Nothing more praiseworthy in North American society than the hard working successful man who goes to church every Sunday and claps his hands to “God is good, all the time”, placing his 10% tithe in the offering plate for a tax break.

Having seen and lived much of this myself, I can say that only when we address the core issues, those being the broken and lonely hearts of men and women, and bring them into wholeness and relationship with God, themselves and others, will healing occur and the need for any form of poison diminish. To preach abstinence??? Really??? Totally delusional and recipe for failure. Amy Winehouse had it right. Rehab? No,no,no.

I think I need a drink.
