Studies of the relative importance of intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation support this very idea quite strongly. See Daniel Pink’s book , “Drive” which is neatly summarized in the animation found here:

Autonomy, mastery and purpose are fundamentally more powerful motivators than any carrot & stick approach. This applies to students every bit as well as to the teachers.
